Heart health: the numbers and the levers

Cholesterol and LDL targets by risk, the statin evidence, blood pressure categories, the exercise dose, salt, alcohol, the Nordic diet and stress — each topic with its published numbers.

Cholesterol: LDL, HDL and the targetsThe numbers on the lipid panel, and which one actually drives risk.
Statins: what the evidence saysThe most-studied preventive drugs in medicine, and the muscle-ache question.
Blood pressure: the number and what to doThe single most treatable risk factor for stroke and heart disease.
Exercise for the heartThe dose and the kind that actually reduce risk.
Salt: the hidden leverThe cheapest blood-pressure intervention in the diet.
Alcohol and the heartThe J-curve is mostly an artefact; the honest relationship is a line.
The Nordic dietThe local version of the Mediterranean idea, with trials behind it.
Stress and the heartThe real pathways — and which "stress" claims are not them.

How the topics fit together

Cardiovascular risk is not a stack of separate problems — it is one system, and the levers overlap: the same salt cut that lowers blood pressure also makes the DASH-Nordic pattern cheaper to follow; the same exercise that lowers LDL also lowers the stress that raises blood pressure; the same alcohol cut improves pressure, weight and sleep at once. That is why the guideline approach is total risk, not single numbers, and why the boring combinations beat the exciting single fixes.

Reference, not medical advice. The targets on these pages are population guidelines — your own targets are set by a clinician from your total risk, history and tests. Chest pain, breathlessness at rest or fainting are emergency symptoms, not reading material.

About the numbers

Thresholds and targets follow the ESC 2021 cardiovascular prevention guideline and the ESC/EAS lipid guideline; drug evidence follows Cochrane; the diet and salt figures follow WHO and the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations. Each topic page names its source.
