Stress and the heart
The real pathways — and which "stress" claims are not them.
Chronic stress raises risk through measurable routes: it pushes blood pressure up, worsens sleep, drives alcohol and snacking, and doubles the relapse rate in people trying to quit smoking. The direct "stress causes heart attacks" story is weaker than the indirect one — stress changes the behaviours that change the risk.
What helps is the same short list as always, pointed at the stress response: exercise (the most reliable stress reducer measured), defended sleep, and cutting the evening alcohol that people use to unwind. Breathing and meditation help some people a lot and the average person a little; the exercise effect is the robust one.
The numbers
- The pathways are real but mostly behavioural: blood pressure, sleep, alcohol, smoking relapse.
- Exercise is the most reliably measured stress reducer.
